With Steam and most importantly CCP Games (Icelandic developers of EVE Online) ending support for win7/8, it appears I have a choice of win10 or 11.

From what experience I have with windows 10 (work PCs and a laptop), I really dont like that OS.

So I'm curious about 11.. is it worse?

I'm not really considering linux an option, because developers obviously cater to the overwhelming market share for windows. Linux and MacOS are afterthoughts, and you have to keep in mind that some software won't run on the platforms.

Linux, bro. Don't reinstall ANYTHING Windows based. Linux fool!!!! Eve online works with Proton. The learning curve is not nearly as bad as people want you to think. ANd I get you "developers catering to Windows" argument, but unless you need a specific Adobe product, Linux can do EVERYTHING windows can.

Virtualization with direct access to the GPU is also possible.

He's coming from Windows. That might be over his head, to start.

Yeah but there are plenty of tutorials on the topic. It’s totally worth it.

Linux is not there for most people that just want to game. Proton is okay now but it can just be a pain in the ass layer that unfortunaly you dont have to deal with on Windows. And he is right some games and apps, flat out dont work.

LINUX,,, do it. I use Linux Mint. Fuck windows, bg gets royalties from every install.

said it, but I wanted to add in I am pretty much as stupid as they come when it comes to computers, and linux with steam and proton will play pretty much any windows game flawlessly. You don't need to suck Bill Gates' dick anymore.

In 10 years, I can't think of a single program I missed from windows. I CAN say, however, if I went to windows, there ARE programs I would miss from Linux.

Like what?

youtubedl, pithos, and dolphin. I know dolphin works cross platform, but in my experience, it runs much better in Linux than Windows.

Win11 is WAY worse. You will absolutely require a mobo upgrade in order to have a "Trusted Platform Module 2.0" on your system. It's the most orwellian name, since as near as I can tell its main job is to give the NSA a backdoor into your machine.

I'm concerned that I may have to do this anyway. My CPU, while advanced for its time, is now ancient.

If your running Windows 7, it is likely time to upgrade hardware also.

I'm in a similar situation with me being reliant on Microsoft Visual Studio for my job: I get warnings: VS will no longer run on your OS, you need Windows 10 or 11. I don't want to update Windows, I already don't like it. So far, I continue to use an older version of VS, but at some point, I need to make a decision. I'm probably going to switch to Visual Studio Code, which runs on every OS and totally forgo the Visual Studio experience.

I've used both Windows 10 and 11, there isn't much difference. If you decide to upgrade, jump to 11 because Windows 10 will soon be obsolete and you'll be forced to upgrade that at some point anyway.

Whatever you do, do NOT upgrade to windows 10/11

keep in mind, when they say they're "ending support for win 7.8" it doesn't mean the game will stop working on those OS'es. It just means they are no longer officially supporting those OS'es, so if there is an OS specific issue in win7/8 (rare), they will not push patches to fix it.

Keep rocking windows 7/8 until the games literally stop working.

Yeah linux munt is a great entry level os, nearly all steam games work with it using proton compatibility.

install linux or you're a pussy

Damn.. now I think I have to go linux.

Haha. ..yeah Linux is gaining in adoption recently. The more people use it, the more developers will stop treating it as an afterthought. (and you can go dual-boot and have both).

I recommend Manjaro Plasma

Yeah right, I'm sure you work for MS and you just created this account for that stupid post of yours

Anyways, I use wine on linux to run legacy windows softwares, it works great, I'm sure there are still stuffs that don't work that great with wine or not at all but I don't care. Also you're not forced to use windows as your main OS, you can go for dual boot/partitioning or even install it on an external hard drive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtajCp2wd5Q

Wine Is Not an Emulator, just so you know

Would you even be able to install 10? I like 10 much better than 11 but it is a struggle to keep it from auto-updating to 11.

[–] 0 pt

Maybe not. I haven't really looked into that.

Well if you game all the time then I would go with Win 10. That way you can disable the TPM chip in the BIOS. That won't keep the govt out of the intel backdoors but your passwords and certs won't be saved onto hardware to make it easier for them. I still use 10 and yeah it's fucking trash but I won't go 11 until I get forced to.

The OTHER option can be a Mac and you can run Win 10 in Vmware Pro or Virtualbox. But I don't know about game performance.
