I’m not looking to sit on my phone for hours at a time playing games, but surely there’s something I should be able to find entertaining.

Admittedly, I don’t like a wide variety of games. In fact, my favorite game is WordFeud I play daily against my dad (for low stakes I keep track of in a spreadsheet).

The only games that catch my eye are Angry Birds (played so many times) and a home run game that seems abandoned and doesn’t hold a torch to their initial iteration from 10+ Years ago.

Any recommendations?

They all suck.

The only thing decent recently is Baldurs Gate 3 and that is only if you can shut out the gay propaganda they try to force upon players.

Do yourself a favor and build your own game using AI help. It's way more productive use of your time.

Which AI would you recommend for this and how could I get the prompts started? Also, which “language” would I be inclined to use as a total novice?

Well, the free ChatGPT is good enough, honestly. Of all advice, programming is its best area.

For a text based, browser based game, you'd use electron, html, css and maybe python and mySQL. Electron merely makes an app that's a browser with a limited scope. So, your game would would in any browser plus in an app.

I recommend porting a turn based board game as your first endeavor into a browser game. A simple one.

First, ask the AI where to get started. Then have it break it down into smaller and smaller steps. Educate yourself in a targeted manner as needed.

Always ask it to make an outline of your process first, then have it generate sub outlines as you go. If you can break it down into enough basic questions, it will do 99% of the work and calculating for you.

It's imagination is limited, but it will spout industry standards all day long.

Thanks so much. I know I asked a lot and it’s mighty White of you for the detailed reply.

Is Angry Birds still a thing? I also liked Fruit Ninja and Cut The Rope.

Yeah. It’s like Angry Birds 2 or remix or something.

The games in Apple Arcade and the Google equivalent aren’t the cash grab freemium games that they’ve all turned into which is nice.

I miss when you could pay $X.xx for an app and you owned it. When I look through my purchases from 15 years ago, so many good little fun games I paid for. They’re nothing like that anymore.

it doesn't work the best, but there is a way to setup emulators on an iPhone.

i am on android, but i recently came back to Into The Dead 2 and i've been playing Asphalt 9 since it came out. 20 Minutes Till Dawn is a nice wee time killer, also Knighthood, Mech Arena, Oz the Broken Kingdom, Plants vs Zombies 1, Zombie Gunship Survival to name a few.
