There is no rule allowing money to be stockpiled in the middle of the board.

Also, when someone lands on an unowned property, either they buy it, or the property is auctioned off to the highest bidder.

Finally, you can't build a hotel on a property unless you first build houses there. If there are no houses available, then you have to wait until there are houses available.

Following the rules as written actually makes the game enjoyable (and it doesn't take 4 hours to play.)

"We've always played it that way" is all well and good, but the Buffalo Bills have always played sportsball that way, which kinda suggests doing it the same way over and over doesn't make it the right way.

Go on... dig out the game from its shelf in the basement and try playing by the actual rules once. It makes a huge difference!

I think the best way to play is just to make up the rules as you go. And if someone is running low on cash, then just give them some from the bank or have whomever is on the lead give up some of their assets. And remove the go to jail cards.

No, no... that's how you play "Democrat Mayor," not Monopoly.

[–] 1 pt

It is not a real democrat city until all the properties are taxed every turn, every roll of dice is taxed, all the rents are havily reduced. Then 80% of those taxes go into the pocket of the mayor and the rest is used to throw scraps to the poorest players for votes.

No one loses, unless you consider being perpetually in poverty losing, but no one is allowed to win. Except the mayor of course.

Don't forget losing a house randomly due to slum tenants, riots...

Sounds like a board game most of the population would enjoy.

[–] 4 pts

That only works for kikes and niggers.

🤡 🌎 approves this diverse and inclusional progressive thunk

Those go to jail cards need to remain for the red house owners.

[–] 1 pt

That sounds like Nigopoly

Stfu you goddamn commie. Why don’t you go eat green beans and whine about polar bears

Monopoly gets gay when you add interest payments to all currency issued by the bank (make it realistic).

If you play long enough, the bank always wins and all other plays are slowly cippled with debt.

[–] [deleted] 2 pts

That sounds like a much better game! I mean - the rules already allow the bank to create money out of thin air, so it's close to realistic already!

[–] 1 pt

That would be cool... playing monopoly as if you all took out loans.

The way to win is make odd deals like I’ll give you the last railroad you need if when I land on any of them I don’t have to pay and you give me $50 of all profit from any off them.

I knew a guy who was a used car salesman in real life and he would always come up with this shit... and throw kid tantrums if someone didn't want to do the deal. People only played with him once.

The official software version of Monopoly does not enforce the buy it or auction it rule when a player lands on an unowned property. It also does not enforce the wait period for houses to become available so you can build a hotel rule. The official video game Monopoly is not using the official rules. What does that mean for the "official rules" in that case?

The official United States government allows, encourages, and incentivizes citizens to pretend they're a different sex and prey on children.

[–] 1 pt

You mean the (((official United States government))).

[–] 1 pt

Yeah, that one. The one that completely ignores the founding documents and citizens.

Monopoly is in no way enjoyable.

I've never found anyone willing to play monopoly.

Board games in general seem quite unpopular today.

nobody has 4 hours and they normally get pretty butthurt. I seen a few monopoly boards fly before.

The whole "Get money from free parking" thing is what kills the game, in my opinion. It artificially inflates the available money, and can prevent someone from going bankrupt who otherwise would have.

Forcing properties to be purchased as soon as they are landed on means the board goes pretty quickly, and side deals become pretty vicious. (We also don't allow 'no rent forever' clauses in property deals; that can also make the game last forever.

Once the first person goes down and their properties are taken care of, the remainder of the game goes pretty quickly. We've played a few times more for nostalgia than anything else (We're a killer bunnies house) and a 4 player game usually only takes an hour.

The makers of Monopoly (Milton Bradley?) actually changed the rules for the Free Parking thing. I used to have an old OLD Monopoly game (one my parents owned) and it had no “collect money for free parking” rule. However, I actually did see with my own eyes a set of Monopoly rules from a newer edition in which it says to place money from fines in the center of the board and collect it on free parking. I think they added this rule around the time the California lottery came in to being. But I did see the rule.

What fucking snowflakes play it like that? Free parking is just a space you don't have to pay rent when you land on it. Do people think "free" means you get paid? Walmart has free parking too, you don't get paid to use it.

Yes those are some common house rules that ruin the experience (and measurably prolong the game).

We play with two house rules:

  1. The game ends when one player is eliminated. (No weird donations or anything to keep them around) This is from Monopoly Jr, and works really well. It should also be implemented in Risk, but I digress.

  2. Roll three dice; pick [the sum of] two. You can use this rule for just the first time around the board, or for the entire game. Gives a little more agency, but still allows for the dice to somewhat decide where you go (e.g. when rolling trips).

Just realizing the way I played as a kid was probably the most realistic. Only the boys played the game while a girl held his money and tried to steal from or swindle the other girls. No rules for the girls. It was incredibly fun.

I had an idea to 3D print little A-frames as “campsites” at half-cost of a house, and some sort of tower for “casinos” at double hotel price. Perhaps you could buy campsites at house price without having all 2 or 3 tiles. Would make the game more fun I think. Probably would need to inflate Go bux tho.
