Nintendo has a long history of shutting down people and groups that just want to use their games either on a different platform or host public events.

I was part of a group in the early 2000's that tried to get Nintendo's approval to port some old games to PC. People were already doing it illegally, but we thought Nintendo would be interested in a more legit operation. We wanted to make it free, and were willing to pay the licensing fees to Nintendo so they wouldn't sue. Nintendo reps squashed the idea and threatened to sue anyhow.

These were people that loved the games and they weren't legally available on a PC, but Nintendo didn't care and would rather have nothing available for fans.
