It's because they stopped treating Standard as a skill based game and tried converting it to pay-to-win. While at the same time cutting tournament rewards for highly competitive players.

It's one thing to have pay to win. Baseball is that way. Non-American football is that way with top teams hiring the best players. However, the payoff is huge. In MTG's case, they made it pay to win and then made the pro scene pay worse than McDonalds.

This simultaneously pissed off casual players who cant afford pay-to-win AND pissed off competitive players who can also no longer afford it. Heck, even as a casual player who could afford to spend a couple grand a year staying competitive in standard...why? Even though I can afford it, it's not appealing at that price point. For someone working at McDonalds? Fricking lol, they can barely afford rent.
