Archive cut off part of the article, but enough is there to get the gist of it.

I wasn't aware this was happening to the game. That's too bad. We used to have a lot of fun playing Magic back in the day.

Artificial scarcity = you don't actually own any value, its just an Illusion of value.

Basically, you're a hostage if you want to keep any of your financial value in their assets.

CCG's are basically the diamond business.

Eventually its just a shiny rock. And as shiny rocks become more common, their value decreases dramatically.

Don't ask me how much money I've wasted over the years on MtG. I played 3 different times throughout my childhood and into adult years. Last set I bought cards in was Khans of Tarkir.

The article is spot on that people would rather play the extended formats. They are more fun, and keeping up with Standard is how you waste a fortune on cards that won't be valuable once they "cycle" out.

I’m sure there was some guy saying this over at magic HQ. I’m sure that guy was told to shut up

You'd hope at least that voice was present, even if it was silenced.

" “Magic: The Gathering” is a trading card business that accounts for about 15% of Hasbro’s revenue and 35% of EBITDA ."

Damn

Ironically the game which who's webhost had originally been a source of the original Bitcoin when it was pennies is now devalued much more than the Bitcoin it hosted as a side item. this of course is because you can't inflate Bitcoin like they're inflating magic the gathering cards.

It's because they stopped treating Standard as a skill based game and tried converting it to pay-to-win. While at the same time cutting tournament rewards for highly competitive players.

It's one thing to have pay to win. Baseball is that way. Non-American football is that way with top teams hiring the best players. However, the payoff is huge. In MTG's case, they made it pay to win and then made the pro scene pay worse than McDonalds.

This simultaneously pissed off casual players who cant afford pay-to-win AND pissed off competitive players who can also no longer afford it. Heck, even as a casual player who could afford to spend a couple grand a year staying competitive in standard...why? Even though I can afford it, it's not appealing at that price point. For someone working at McDonalds? Fricking lol, they can barely afford rent.

Kind of like all the worthless mass produced baseball cards a lot of us got as kids.

Those cards had value though. They had information on them. You could read a player's stats.

Idk. I got some Nolan Ryan cards that are worth big bucks.

A friend of mine was a MTG judge and he quit due to the fractal level faggotry the game has been reduced to.

Sad. I've never been more than a casual player, but it's a shame to see things people enjoy be destroyed by greed and mismanagement.
