I never really liked Lara's redesign, she looks more like a timid rat who belongs in a library, quietly tending to books. None of the confidence and badassery she's known for.
I have heard that that kind of thing, the making female characters less attractive is done on purpose to either A:be sensitive to the trans community or B: its bad cause straight white males like attractive women and male gaze is evil of course. or C: the desire to destroy the definition of a woman and good femininity in general as they have already made a mockery of masculinity.
It's B and C mostly. Fighting "unattainable beautiful standards" and the "patriarchy". But of course show them (aka the gamer gate female empowerment circlejerk crowd) a jacked male character and there are crickets from them. It's all about the narrative they push.
