Avoid Oculus, it's full of Zuck shit. Currently the best is the Valve Index, but it's not cheap and stock levels vary. If you can find a working second hand Vive it's a good starting point, as the lighthouses (the IR laser beacons used for tracking) are compatible with the Index headset and controllers. There are cheaper headsets but there are tradeoffs, like graphics quality, tracking system, controller, and supported platforms.
I have a Rift S. For a while I used a Quest 2 but it is buggy and never worked smoothly. Also it uses compression so despite higher resolution it looked worse than the Rift S. The Rift S is great and they can be found for next to nothing used. Check Craigslist and offer someone $100. They will accept.
Even the virtual houses and rooms and theaters you can sit in for the oculus are amazing.
It's like being in an apartment on top of a skyscraper or at a fire in the middle of the desert at night or whatever.
