I remember play-testing DayZ back when it was an Arma2 mod, and man was it bleak. At that point there was no crafting at all, just scrounging and looting. I can see how it formed the core concept for other survival games though, even down to the "spawning naked on the beach" mechanic. But it had very little fun factor.
