Ok, that's a bit encouraging. Ctrl-v/Ctrl-c does not seem to me to work (consistently) in Ubuntu with Gnome. It does work in *some* programs. Middle mouse button probably works for pasting (also for copy?), but I'll probably risk accidentally scrolling.
