I admit this happened to me. It was a crypto mining virus. I'll never pirate any program/game again.

Get Linux for free and you'll never have to do that ever.

I currently dual-boot Windows/Ubuntu, but tend to use Windows more. Had to spend 20 hours actively to get Linux to display at full resolution & full refresh rate on my TV. Still have some problems with multi-screen setup where some screens just being black sometimes. (Also tried MX Linux, Manjaro and Mint with less success)

Maybe I'll try to switch to Linux fully at some point but I prolly need more "Linux-compatible" hardware.

Also copy-paste sucks on Linux. On Mac you do CMD-c/CMD-v, on Windows Ctrl-c/Ctrl-v, but in Linux it's Ctrl-Insert/Shift-Insert. My laptop doesn't even have an Insert key easily accessable, especially I can't to copy-paste using only with one hand.

My feelings about Linux are a bit mixed.

Almost 25 years in and I don't think I've ever even heard of using Insert for copy/paste.

You just highlight what you want and the middle click where you want it. Or Ctrl-v/Ctrl-c. There's a bit of variance from desktop environment to desktop environment but I can't remember that last time one or both of those did not work.

MX linux ctrl c copy ctrl v paste. This is in thunar the xfce file manager also with firefox to be more complete.

I used to dual-boot using Linux primarily for many years. The end result I just stopped gaming because rebooting and only being able to exclusively game or do other things was just too much of a pain in the ass.

I eventually went back to windows. If I were to do it again, I think the optimum solution for now would be to run Linux in a Virtual Machine. The resource requirements for running a browser, spreadsheets, word processor etc are so low I just think it makes the most sense.

use ctrl+shift+c and ctrl+shift+v. Its worked on every systems ive used unless im using some odd browser based virtual console.

I went in and changed the name of cmd.exe to cmd2.exe ... it seems no virus checks that and immediately halts.

Does that not fuck up every installer?

[–] 5 pts

Heck, to me, even an anti-virus software is considered a virus.

Is cmd a virus?

[–] [deleted] 5 pts

Not the term, it opens the DOS prompt and runs the virus that is already in the zip or rar file you downloaded so it's a windows program that is used to execute the virus.

Command "cmd" is the old dos type where you type in term like internet explorer.exe and your web browser opens or if you're having internet connection problems from hell then in windows type netsh winsock reset which returns your internet network stack configuration to factory settings so any changes a virus or program made will be removed and it basically removes all shit and leaves your system in standard settings.

If you used linux it would be the terminal. Now if you open the start menu look for the run box. Now type cmd.exe, this is safe btw. That is the command com or dos prompt you will see like the old days of window 3.1 through xp this was really the norm for some stuff back then. To clean the system in the computer I'm using now I type sudo apt autoremove then type in the password and it's clean in 1 second or so unlike windows 10 cleanup that takes up to 5 minutes for the same thing sometimes.

In Windows, cmd is the command prompt, meaning the pirated “game” likely ran something harmful upon launch.

A lot of legit games do this on first run, though. Registering DLLs and such. You do get viruses from pirated games; I'm just saying a command prompt launching is not diagnostic.

I've seen this happen on websites.

Should I keep all my sensitive information on my computer?

I keep all my passwords in a text file on my desktop.

I've learned this technique from many corporations over the years. Since they always tell me my data will be secure and never compromised.

Why ask questions when you can follow blindly? It's just easier that way.

I have never gotten a virus from pirating anything. Even back in the Napster days.

It's actually pretty normal...

[–] 0 pt

That's why you run shit in a virtual machine first.

Firejail etc

Gaming in a gaming only partition or vmware

[–] 0 pt

If I were writing a root kit I'd write over every partition on your system. Launching Windows natively off a partition won't stop it from writing to the rest of the disk unless you actually use a VM

Encrypt your partitions I guess

I get those all the time, should I be worried?

[–] 2 pts

No, I made another post to this effect, but legit games do this all the time.

Thanks. I have narrowed my sources down to three key sources that I have used for several years with no personal issues encountered thus far. It would have been strange to have been adversely affected for so long and not notice at all.

Oh hell yeah, they not only crack the game for you but you then get the secret bonus unlocked when that command prompt shows for just a moment, free joy right there. To bad Linux can't experience that Windows hack love. :)
