Here's the non-Epic Games Dick Sucking, story:

Epic Games, like the scumbags they are, snuck in a back door into their app that would bypass Apple's in-app purchases because they didn't want to pay Apple the 30% fee for in-app purchases. Epic Games wanted that 30%. So in their app updates (Apple has to review and approve), they didn't even disclose they did this - hid it in their code, too, so Epic could sneak through the back door.

Apple caught them, inevitably, and then a legal battle ensued.

There are 2 problems:

  1. Apple charging 30% for any in-app purchases.
  2. Epic Games being slimeballs and trying to sneak code in the back door to avoid any and all Apple fees.

Both companies are being dicks, here.

Epic Games tried to skim some money on the side and ended up royally fucking themselves over. Why they ever thought this was a good idea is beyond me.

Ahhh a couple of million/billion dollar companies fighting it out. Thanks for actually knowing something cause going by just the headline it sounds like Apple just got salty over nothing. Maybe they shouldn’t be charging but it’s not salty over nothing. Now show me your dick please. Or send a picture of your puppy dog

Exactly. Apple is an easy target so articles like those get traction, clicks, shares, retweets, views, etc. But Epic Games are not small peanuts:

They deserve each other. The sin visits the sinner and all that.

Then again, are there any non-pozed game companies?

100% agreed; very good points.

Why is to dickery to avoid Apple's fees? All they want to do is sell their stuff on iPhone. Apple is the one that gatekeeps their user's phones.

I'll rephrase your question so it is easier to understand what you're asking:

"Why does Apple charge a percent fee for apps that want to make use of Apple's payment system, hosting services, front-end ecosystem, and get access to their player base?"

Does that help better understand why gaming platforms like Epic Games, Steam, Apple, and Google Play charge fees to function as the front end for publishers? Unless they publish their own ecosystem, they have to use someone else. In this case, Epic Games wanted to use Apple's and get access to Apple's devices. They didn't want to pay the fees and they signed contracts stating that they WOULD pay the fees and how they would not bypass the agreement with back doors. Everyone has to sign that agreement if you want to publish on their platform. Just like Steam. Just like the Epic Game Store. Just like Google Play. Just like HBO Max, Hulu, etc. etc. etc. All hosting systems have similar systems in place.

30% is too high and Apple are price gouging.

Epic Games is lead by giant scumbags (not a secret in the gaming industry).

Just keep paying your taxes even as they raise the rates in capital gains in the future so brown ppl can live rent-free in white countries at the expense of the middle class.

“Hey man, you’re being a mega douche trying to avoid the IRS ridiculous tax fees like that. Shame on you.”
