I've seen people saying that it appears to be happening if you leave the game on the main menu, where the FPS will reach into the hundreds, pegging the GPU at 100% load, and then it craters, maybe from overheat. So you press ESC, go take care of something, like taking a dump, come back 10 minutes later to a black screen.

? It's really not the job of the game developer to anticipate your video card's lack of cooling. There's a reason this is only happening to one specific brand of card -- they fucked up designing it, and this just happens to be the first vidya game with a bug that triggers the failure condition.

Story I heard was no cooling on whatever modules are on the back the video card; RAM or something. So the mfr fucked up and it's only now getting noticed.
