Old ones were great platformer puzzlers and compared to the mountain of trash developed every year for consoles they were pretty damn good for their time, but I cant tell you they aged well. The newer ones are ok as far as big name studios go, but if your not into the button mashers or quick times events they can be grating. Both versions do have some exploration shooter/stealth elements. Edit: Also the new ones had the benefit of mirroring the reality of the world into triggering those that reject reality. Namely that an attractive young woman being stranded on an island with a bunch of violent mercenary thugs would actually be at risk of being raped/murdered if she was not strong enough to shoot the guy.
