Polymorph is how you survive an encounter with a dragon with only 4th level spells. Turn the dragon into a trout. Just avoid that cone-shaped area in front of the trout.
1- breath attacks are magic, polymorph disables spells
2- doing that only works until you exceed the hp of the trout, then it changes back and any excess damage spills over into the dragon's life pool
Provided you didn't want to actually fight the trout-dragon, you could either take the treasure and go, or toss it in a bag of holding until it suffocated...
I'm going to have to try this next time I'm up against one with my trickster cleric.
It gives you options, options you can mull over a bit without the old "claw-claw-bite-breathe" interrupting your train of thought. Also, while the breath attack of a dragon is magic, that's because it's a magical beast, so it's not a spell. You can make a spell that mimics it, but the dragon's breath is quasi-natural.
Indeed. Also, tossing it in a bag of holding might be a little tricky, because you're not getting that thing back out of there...
