The reality is you need venture capital to make the jump to mainstream. At that point you no longer own or control anything (((they))) do.

I don't give a shit about being "Mainstream", if you're product is good it'll take off. Look at the Witcher games. Far from mainstream when it was released and nobody really heard of software coming out of poland but Witcher 3 is one of the best RPGs of all gaming.
