The first Secretary of Defense (after it was changed from 'Sec of War') was James Forrestal. He committed suicide by jumping out of a 13th floor window at Bethesda Naval Medical Hospital in Washington, DC in 1949.
His last words were, "They're here... they have taken over... and there is nothing we can do about it." ...or so the story goes.
