I bought the game after you recommended it and played further than this point tonight. Maybe they made this part easier since 2018 but I got it on my first try. I just ran, whistled for the horse, mounted it and pushed the horse as hard as I could while staying on the path with no problems. Btw, loving it so far.

Coll, glad to hear it. If you are on PC I would suggest you install some mods to smooth out the game paly and the grinding.
