I currently have a gtx 1080.

I'm looking at upgrading to a 2080ti or maybe even a 3090 as the 3090s are just a few hundred more than the 2080 and is a biiiiiiig performance jump up according to the shit I've been watching.

Is it worth it? the 1080 is becoming obsolete. I have a 4k monitor but play my games at 1440p because the 1080 (as well as just about anything else except maybe the 3090, but even it can't get 60fps doing 4k on maxed out settings for these high-end games I want to play. But at 1440p the 3090 or maybe even the 2080 or 2080ti would be enough.

Or is there an AMD option that is much better than the 1080 but cheaper than the Nvidia options? I don't know shit about AMD cards.

3090 is only 5-10% more powerful than the 3080, and it is twice the price. I would not recommend getting the 3090. Also, the 3080 is faster than the 2080ti for cheaper.

Problem is, unless you are very lucky, you aren't getting any of these cards for MSRP.

Or at all with a lot of retailers out of stock.

3080 is best bang for ur buck atm

You should totally get one of those awesome and cool 3dfx Voodoo graphics cards! They're RAD!

This was my first card... erm... I mean my current and best card on the market!

[–] 0 pt

I think this was my first REALLY GOOD card.

My first was... um, I have no idea, I forget because that was forever ago. But it was something super awesome, like some kind of Realtek VGA ISA card which I bought for my XT, but then later also used in my 386DX for awhile, before upgrading to SuperVGA! Or something. The first one was totally monochrome.

Prices are fucking absurd right now for both nvidia and AMD cards, and probably won't go back to normal until next year at least. Like what YoureJewish said, you'll have to be extremely lucky to find a new one at the standard MSRP. Stick with the GTX 1080, it's still a solid GPU.

Just out of curiosity, what games are you playing that you want to have running at 4k/60fps? And what is the rest of your computer's specs?

[–] 0 pt

I don't actually want to play games at 4k. The specs needed to achieve 60fps at 4k playing Rust or Insurgency: sandstorm or even World Of Tanks are too demanding for my gpu I think. I don't think it's a cpu issue but I do think it is a GPU issue, and maybe even possibly be that I need more RAM.

[–] 0 pt

Is World of tanks is still going strong?

That's the last game I played before giving up TV and gaming altogether, had some great times with the old clan on there.

[–] 0 pt

Yeah, I think so. Great game. World of Warships too.

You can try creating a custom resolution like 3200x1800 and see how that goes. It won't be as demanding as 4k and will look better than 1440p. I think for Rust you should probably stick to 1440p but for those other 2 games you listed you can probably get 60fps at 1800p.

I saw your other comment on your computer specs, and judging by the hardware I recommend you wait until next year to do a full upgrade. If you got the shekels I recommend getting a 1440p/100Hz display or better as well. For online games, high refresh rate displays are far better than higher resolution ones.

I'm happy with the 3080. Does it all.

[–] 1 pt

What resolution, games, and graphics settings u play and what FPS do u usually get?

[–] 1 pt

I'm in it for movies, mostly. Can handle the 20GB+ 4k movies better than the old 1080Ti. Kids play it all. Big on Overwatch. Subnautica. Doom. Max settings on everything. Using emulators, too. I'll ask them about fps.

1080 is a good card and it's a shit time to upgrade given the constricted market. 3070 ($680) is going for almost $2k, I don't know where you're shopping but that's what it looks like here.

Alternatively, I would broaden your horizons on the monitor. If you can't see the pixels, it's wasted processing power. Use to calculate a display that matches your viewing distance and needed screen real estate. Personally, if I got a 4k display it would be about 40" 16:9. I sit about 30 inches away from my monitor when I game. I like about 110 PPI. I can't notice a difference beyond that resolution wise. If you're playing at 4k 60fps on a 24" monitor, I'd rethink your priorities.

I've been using a 3440 x 1440 34" 60fps monitor with a 1070 for years and I haven't felt the need to upgrade until I played Horizon Zero Dawn. If I upgrade, I think I'd aim for a 144hz HDR 21:9 monitor rather than 4k. If you edit 4k video or something, disregard this advice.

[–] 0 pt

It's a 4k 16:9 60hz monitor. Nothing special. I set all my games at 1440p though because 4k is often too demanding. I should have been smarter when buying the monitor and got a 1440 120hz monitor.

[–] 0 pt

What's the size and how far do you sit from it?

[–] 1 pt

27" size and maybe 2 feet away. maybe slightly more but not 3

If it was me I'd hold off. What you will pay is not worth it. I say, $34k bitcoin in 60 days and hopefully stabilizes. If crypto cools down that should help prices level off a bit. One problem is with this 'chip shortage'. As far as I can tell it's just backlogs of orders from poly-silicon manufacturers that cannot keep up with demand.

In the long run (2-3) years, GPU prices might never be cheap again.

Best bet would be to wait for availability and then also sell your 1080, bet you could get at least $600 for it.

[–] 0 pt

Bitcoin is mined with custom hardware, not GPUs. GPUs are used for shitcoins.

[–] 0 pt (edited )

The 3090 is 2900 bucks dude. I mean if you actually want one now. I'd wait. Get a used 2xxx from someone who upgraded.

I actually just got a 3080 laptop, and I'm pissed. It's not capable of playing most games in 4K but I have a 4K panel. I'm debating whether to return it. Which I can do for like 12 more days.

[–] 0 pt

You can find them for like 2200 i think

[–] 0 pt

Still. I mean it's your money. I edited my story above, but i'm a laptop gamer.

[–] 0 pt

Nah I think I'll wait until I can get a 2080ti or something for a reasonable price. The price gouging is ridiculous. I'm usually a generation or two behind whatever the newest thing is anyways. I was using a gtx 670 and 780 for the longest time.

[–] 0 pt

Yeah, the laptop versions of gpus are never as good as they claim to be. I would keep it though and just play my games at 1440. Even the 3090 can't get 60fps at 4k max settings on a lot of games.

[–] 0 pt

I might. However, I can return it for no money to me (I think) and replace it with a 1440 native laptop with a 3080. Those are scarce right now, but I can wait and use my two years old model. I've also thought about trying the eGPU thing with said older laptop. If u know anything let me know.

[–] 0 pt

Oooo that's a good idea. 4k is overrated anyways.

[–] 0 pt

I run world of warships in 4k all maxed out on 1080, cod mw on 73% native 4k resolution all settings high to ultra. Remnant from the ashes 4k as well.

[–] 0 pt

What's the rest of your specs? Could be GPU is fine and you have a bottleneck somewhere else.

[–] 1 pt

I7-7700k I think, 16gb of RAM, SSD. Gigabyte Z270 ultra durable gaming motherboard. Gtx 1080

[–] 0 pt

I would bump up your ram and wait for inventory.... then go full upgrade on your motherboard and cpu as well.

Are you sure you're not just projecting your own faggotry?
