Really, it would be for me and a 5-year old. Nothing too complicated. Thinking Nintendo Wii.

But I have not played a video game since like Atari 2600.

Advice?

Just make sure it can play Battletoads

LOL. Okay, I'll keep that in mind.

Gamecube

Reason?

Good games and great multi-player. Not internet based

Thank you

Not the person you're replying to, but they were REALLY cheap and extremely easy to mod giving you thousands of games.

Might be harder to find now.

Nintendo Switch. Play it with two people without having to buy an extra controller. Hell, play it with two people wherever you want without needing a screen to plug it into. Play it at home on the TV. Mario Kart, Super Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy or Odyssey. Legend of Zelda. Super Smash Brothers. Mario Party. What else do you need besides that?

I play a few PS4 games with my 4 year old, there is a Paw Patrol one and an Ugly Dolls one that he likes.

However, at some point soon I'll probably get an old WiiU and put homebrew on it, download n64, GameCube, she's & nes rom libraries and start him on some of the classics (without paying for old carts)

You should play Little Big Planet with him sometime.

I have Little Big Planet 3 and have played with him! It's a little too advanced for him, o think 2 more years he will be all over it though. Thanks for the suggestion. Another favorite for a 4 year old is swinging around the city in spiderman before you engage the first enemy checkpoint in the game, because there is literally no fighting until that point

The new Nintendo is more kid friendly, just regardless of what system you get you shouldn't let the kid get consumed by it.

No of course not. He is only allowed to watch 1 hour of tv a day. We raised him right.

My brothers got one it has games his older kids like and good puzzle solving games for the younger ones.

I always wished I had a Wii as a kid but PS3 is good

I think video games turned to sheet after ~2010, it's all about making $$ instead of good games... So yeah PS3

Will take PS3 into consideration. Thank you for background info.

Buy some books and read to your 5 year old. Start with Treasure Island. The time spent together will be more valuable than a video game. It is not about the game, it is the time spent together. Take him hinting and fishing as well. Teach self sufficiency to your children.

Done, done, done, and continue to do.

I can tell he is ready for something new in his life to spice it up, that's all.

Wii. Or try fishing I mean take your kid fishing and start him on a life long addiction.

Yes. We have been fishing, kayaking, camping and hiking for 2 years. Sometime 8 miles in a day. Little dude is a monster.

N64 with 4 controllers and Mario kart/goldeneye/bomber man/Mario party.

Best family/home multiplayer ever.

Get him a Commodore 64 and make him work through all the consoles.

Download Project64 and a bunch of Nintendo 64 roms, lol. Or Dolphin for Gamecube (and I think Wii).

If you're going to get an actual console, I'd probably do a Switch and just get them Minecraft. There are some other kiddy games as well. Mario Odyssey and BoTW and stuff like that, might be too much for a 5 yo.
