GameStop never had the overhead to be able to do something like this. The most GS was able to buy out was other low income game retail store Funcoland (maybe other small shops but I'm too lazy to research that).

I don't know many people that bought the Blockbuster computers back in the day. Did Blockbust come out with line of media players and cellphones?
Apple Has a very secure market in phones and computers. Regardless of how much they suck compared to everything else they still have the fan base.
GameStop has next to zero fan base. Anyone who shopped there is willing to buy from anyother chain store/Amazon.
Now, they do have enough capital to buy out one of those companies, including one that could design build GameStop computer/game consol/ whatever. So it makes more sense to compare this new GameStop to Apple, than to blockbuster.
