You don't even need mods for D2, unless you want to play alone and don't want to grind 10,000 pindle runs. Last time I played there was still an economy going. Hard for a new player to break into that level though.

If you want to play in the lawless open battle.net. If you want to play ladders and have it be honest play with a real economy you're going to have to pay the 5 bucks or whatever it is.
