It makes me think again about how the boy scouts were dismantled. Some child abusers got in, but better vigilance would weed them out. Then the demand to let girls in should have been shut down.
It was death by a thousand cuts but a good and long lived tradition was ruined and I don't know if it was extremely well planned or just an example of apathy and appeasement not standing firm and keeping the tradition alive.

I think it's more the latter than the former. Think of how little a role fathers play in society these days and how attacked young men are. The Boy Scouts were running out of scouts and scoutmasters through the war of attrition against their core members.
