Even the fan made content about this game sucks.

Dark souls is a completely over rated game that is not fun. Im not sure its even challenging, it just massively wastes the players time. Its a game of patience more than anything, and what creativity is there was wasted on this game. :-/

It does not lack for entertaining, engaging, and creative situations. The series largely revolves around learning to read enemies and engage them in a manner that prevents you taking damage. It is an exploration, damage avoidance, geometric puzzle solving, and ambience based title if it is anything.
I would consider the games to be an extension of the Metroidvania genre even though many call Souls-like a genre meaning great difficulty.
And yes, they are overrated, but not greatly. The series of games that have spawned from From Software are all a very interesting and while clearly cut from the same basic mould are each unique and special experiments in the a way that fuses many different styles of games that have come before.
The big rub for most people is that it is less forgiving than many modern games, which allow for a great many mistakes. The Soulsian titles all expect you to learn from the examples they provide and to learn to expect traps and enemies to be a challenge. I would say their boss battles are probably their greatest weakpoint, where their enemies will often require you to dodge around and stab it in the ass.
Patience, puzzle solving, and an appreciation of the ambient environmental story telling is needed to enjoy the game.

I didn't like it at all. The environment was unique but that wasn't enough to save it. I have a huge write up somewhere on my thoughts.

The boss battles are playing in a quirk of video game programming, i.e. zero point errors...? That's beyond stupid imo. I played the game without armor because it slowed me down so bad. Also, steam shows the game has a 20-30% completion rate, so i think people have been bullied into saying they like it. Might be there japs online posting that stuff

I 100 percented Demon's Souls, the rest I played less of because while they work to refine the concepts of gameplay, they are not each a fundamental change to the series that brings it to a new level. I never even partook of the multiplayer, not once. I don't like multiplayer gaming so it left me disinterested in the PvP aspect which many of the more hardcore players latch onto.
I would not trust Steam to show just how interested in a game people are, as many who buy games, especially on Steam, never really play them at all. I would say the better way to gage how engaged a player base got with a game would be to see how many people got the first achievement that also completed the game. I know many games that people picked up in sales and bundles are great games, but not getting the playthrough numbers that would illustrate that to the casual eye.

Ah, makes sense with the achievement part. I don't use services where i cant own my games, so i wouldn't know

In a modern setting, that means you only use Good Old Games, and don't run Windows.
