Since he had the red gun selected, and then he cranked up that voltage, I was imagining that the picture tube restorer pulses broke through the potential cathode poisoning in the red gun. I don't really know how that picture tube restorer works, don't know what selecting the red gun and dialing up the voltage with red gun selected actually does.
