I've gone from russets as a kid, back to red and gold fingerling potatoes, back to russets, because they are really great for making fries and in stew. My favorite, though, is the satsumaimo...though it's a sweet potato, so I don't think it counts. (different family, I think they're related to morning glories, instead of nightshades)
