Thermal label printers. The rolls of labels are cheap. No ink as it uses heat. I got myself a cheap shipping label printer.

Thanks, I'll look into one. At the moment I have some super cheap inkjet all in one. If I'm gonna make labels I want to go your route so they are more permanent.

Look for a business going out business. Brand new the printers are not cheap. However, can be had for cheap or free. They come in usb now. But if all you can find is a serial port version for even cheaper. You can get a usb to serial adaptor. Drivers are online. Get perforated lables.
