Tomato soup is just tomatoes and fat (butter/creme/etc) to thicken with heat, with some salt or garlic for flavor. Add a stick of butter to ketchup and you really aren't that far off.

Ketchup has too much tang (vinegar, worchestershire sauce, or lactic acid from fermentation) to fit.

And American ketchup has way too much fucking sugar. A tablespoon of ketchup is 5 carbs and 4 grams of added sugar. A serving of tomato soup is 16 times larger and has the same amount of sugar.

That too. My wife used to make her own ketchup. That stuff was really good. Very savory with just a hint of natural sweetness, as ketchup should be.
