They thought that they can control him because they thought that they control the KGB where he came from. But when the KGB lost its Soviet leadership they turned out to be patriots. When Putin was young he joined the KGB to serve his country, and many of his colleagues did the same. When Putin became President, many of his ex colleagues worked for the Jewish oligarchs who installed Putin. He reminded his ex colleagues that it is worth to fight for the fatherland and turned them against their new employers. Most oligarchs fled Russia and the remaining ones made deals.
