I don't know how they work now, I was a Marine in the late 60's - early 70s. Then the saying was 'every Marine is a rifleman'. After boot camp every body went thru infantry training. Then those that were to be infantry went to an infantry unit, and the rest went to their specialty training school. So if you weren't in an infantry unit running around in the boondocks all the time, the only time you got to fire your weapon was once a year.
