In a lot of technical professions you need those little bits of info before you can take on the job to get experience. The degree is proving that you've mastered the theory and are now ready for the practice. You can't just get experience as an architect by designing high rises that collapse, for example. If there are no grades or admissions requirements there's no way to know if you learned the theory.

That's why trade schools always a good 1st start.

Then transfer to college to solidify what you've learned OJT.
