Unfortunately, most 18 year Olds know nothing about money. In no other realm would an 18 year old qualify for a credit line anywhere close to the amount extended for student loans. The vast majority have no idea what they are getting into. They just sign what the financial aid officer tells them to sign. Parents should educate kids about how the loans work but that rarely happens.

I remember having the concept of loan collateral explained to me while I was a pre-teen. Most adults barely grasp that, much less how compound interest on college loans work.
