David Foster Wallace said a lot of this stuff in the 90s and called out how irony was going to turn culture into a vapid meaningless society.

I'm interested. Any particular sources or links or quotes or excerpts I should read, instead of having to go through his entire corpus?

A cursory glance, it seems to me what DFW did was to deeply inspect, not society, but himself, and correctly assume the counterintuitive notion that he is not special, and by so doing, extrapolate, the minute details of his inner life, into potential projections of the future.

If that is all it takes to predict the future of human behavior writ large, trends, and developments, then introspection is the highest virtue, quality, and skill of any would-be fortune teller.

In other words he was perhaps, being generous here, an oracle.
