Even just today I saw a Live translated broadcast of Vladimir Zalensky still demanding that NATO enforce a no-fly zone and start WWIII. He compared their invasion to Pearl Harbor and was trying to guilt USA into fighting for them. Ukraine is an extremely corrupt former Soviet territory that has only been independent since 1992. Russia made it clear for decades they wouldn't accept Ukraine joining NATO or not remaining neutral.

If they enlisted with the Ukrainian army, their nationality does not matter and as a bonus; when they deserted in times of war, it's a crime punishable by death..

I have no idea and don't know how you can enlist into Ukrainian armed forces as a forign national, but possibly it's sufficient to hook up to some faction, being registered by that..
Showing up on a battlefield without enlisting, participating in combat, makes you an illegal combattant, with likely next to no legal protection what so ever..

A member of my extended family went to Iraq before the first gulf war, early 90s. He was in college at the time and got with a group to be 'human shields' in Baghdad. When they got there their passports were taken and they were kept in run down hotel. They were taken to a hospital once to sit in front of for a press photo shoot. After that they were taken to govt buildings to sit in front. After a week 4-5 of them convinced their 'escorts' that they needed their passports to go to the US Embassy and renew their visas. Then pooled all their money and found a taxi that would drive them all the way to the border with Jordan.
