I mean if he slashed that knife instead of throwing a punch he could've killed it. He was obviously quick enough to land a hit.

It takes a few seconds to bleed out even if you get a perfect cut. I would think the roo would have definitely come after him with claws if he had used the knife. Even a dumb animal -- and roos are pretty damn dumb -- understand escalation of violence.
