It takes a few seconds to bleed out even if you get a perfect cut. I would think the roo would have definitely come after him with claws if he had used the knife. Even a dumb animal -- and roos are pretty damn dumb -- understand escalation of violence.

It didn't look like it was doing anything other than holding the dog, until the guy attacked...then it looked like a kick was aimed at the dog. Funny look of disbelief once the guy punched it!
