>7th Day Adventism: Shit happens on Saturdays. >>

As a former SDA I appreciate the mention.

Ellen G. White prophesied shit was going to happen in 1844. When it didn't happen she claimed God lied to test our faith but in 1888 this time it was really going to happen. Then it didn't. Something did happen, you just can't see it. Then for no reason all she stopped talking shit.

“Have we made this mistake today in trying to distinguish between the “law of Moses” and the “law of God?” (Simply put, the law of man or the law of God?)

Looking into what you said was interesting and thought provoking, thanks for the lead.

Started to read through the back and forth messages between EGW and her many detractors and realized I've heard it all before while growing up in that church.

You can boil down her defense quite simply. Anyone who questioned her on any point she would attempt to discredit as a heretic rather than address the actual argument.

She would eagerly take the role of "accuser of the brethren". You can look up that phrase on bible gateway dot com for insight into her nature. Her message is from God and you risk eternal damnation if you disagree.

In her personal life she was a secret alcoholic and hypocrite. She condemned eating non kosher foods but sent a letter to a friend asking for s crate of tinned oysters and in another letter rebuked a church member who criticized another member who raised pigs and ate pork, because the farmer worked hard and needed the strength the pork gave him. She drank large amounts of home brewed "vinegar" for her health but the declared it bad for health and a sin after she went cold turkey. Her "vinegar" was nothing more than soured wine.

She was ignorant of science, a poor writer who needed a team of editors to correct her rants, a liar, a plagiarist who also stole material from one man's house on one occasion, delusional and paranoid.

She started her bizarre career as church prophet after she was struck on the nose as a child and was bedridden for months. On recovering somewhat she would frequently suffer seizures and reawaken to tell of her "visions". I particularly enjoyed the one about humanoid aliens living on the moons of Jupiter who she spoke with. Vegetarian aliens no less.

Any wonder I eventually grew disillusioned?

Yes, that’s quite a lot to ponder, especially as a child. I was raised Protestant, Church of the Nazarene, some fire and brimstone haunted my dreams, but love was a big part of the church too. I got saved two times because I liked the process and special treatment, full body immersion; felt so very clean afterwards. :) Children also have their burdens and placing those burdens on God sometimes can helped, still does.
