My wife went to a school in a Los Angeles suburb that had Yom Kippur as a holiday. I guess they had a fair amount of jews in that suburb. One year after Yom Kippur my wife had a friend that reported that she spent Yom Kippur at a LAPD station. She was out riding her bike having a good time when a LAPD cruiser rolled up. One of the cops asked her, "Hey kid, why aren't you in school?" She responded, "It's Yom Kippur. We have the day off." The cop says, "Yom kipper! What the hell is that! Sure kid. Get in the car." So she spent the rest of the day waiting at the station for her parents to pick her up, since they were at work. She only knew her home number. Calls to her school went unanswered because no one was there.
