Piranhas rarely attack living prey, unless they are desperate or stressed out. They just have a bad reputation like crows.
Sounds like someone who never threw mice I piranha tank. They ate baby mice like popcorn, but the full grown mice were a bit of a battle
Maybe your laid back Brazilian variety. Where I lived, further upriver, they seemed to have no trouble with taking a bite out of whatever they fancied.
