Those plugged into the matrix are dying in the real world due to a spreading disease the machines are unable to prevent or disrupt. What we are witnessing is the replacement of "real" people with machine AI replacements. NPCs as we would accurately describe them. And the unfortunate aspect of AI-NPC like characters is that they are becoming enough of a population that they're affecting what would be the normal course of events for the "normies".
We're getting to the point of breakage in the programming.
