Owning one in CA is certainly insanity.

Of course, this is a big part of the green push. You cannot have green energy without backing it with fossil or nuclear power. Which means the true cost of green energy is its cost plus the backing costs. It's literally impossible for green energy to ever be cheaper than fossil fuel. Well, not without significant inventions.

Interestingly enough, nuclear actually is green energy and it's cheaper and safer than everything.

People are gleefully ignorant that Chernobyl wasn't an accident. It was a conscious mistake made because of ego and hubris.

Agreed. With every nuclear accident to date, nuclear is safer and requires less land and lower cost (most of which is artificial) than everything else.

Look up mining accidents. Where do these people think the raw material for solar panels and gigantic windmills come from? Not only does the mining destroy the land where the mining happens (which requires previously mined materials to produce the equipment to do larger scale mining), but these solar panel and windmill farms destroy the land where they are installed, requiring clearcutting of areas larger than a nuclear plant would require. And that doesn't get into the upkeep and maintenance! Do they know how often solar panels and windmills need to be repaired? Because by design they must be out in the open, subject to the forces of nature. So they constantly need repaired or even replaced. And do they know where those damaged components go? Because there's basically no way to recycle them that doesn't take more resources than producing a brand new one from scratch, which requires further mining!

The only alternative I guess could work in a very specifically acceptable location would be upright turbine windmills.

And even then, what do they suppose will power the electric grid when it's cloudy or not windy?

Al Gore bought tremendous amounts of interest in Green Mountain Energy before he made An Inconvenient Truth.

I have a mixed feeling about Nuclear plants. First there is nuclear waste.... lot of radioactive waste. You can throw this shit in Oceans and get radioactive leaking after some time, or bury it somewhere and get radioactive poisoning after some time. Other than that, nuclear plants have his expiration date. After some time you must shut it down, clean as much as possible and very carefully 'wrap up' to avoid radioactive leaking... and maintenance this shield, monitoring situation for hundred of years. Conservative estimate of shutdown cost are 3 or more times of costs of building nuclear plant. Heh, for sure shitbags will cut all corners to make seal cheaper.

On the other hand there are Thorium nuclear plants, old technology, but unfortunately abolished... because there is no military usage. China make some experiments in recent time, until west still believe in solar / wind magic. If west continue with this bullshit, he will become dependent not only of Mid East oil, but also will be dependent of Chinese technology, energy. With all respect solar / wind are not practical as main energy source. Also are not so 'green', environment friendly like they lie. Price is also much higher, when you account all costs, but who care, this will be pay for citizens pockets.

On average only 2% of the fuel is used. The waste isn't actually waste. It's fuel. 98% fuel. Carter screwed us on this. It's a pen stroke away from fixing itself.

Conservative estimate of shutdown cost are 3 or more times of costs of building nuclear plant.

Nope. Leftist propaganda. They are required to fund decommissioning up front. Coal has similar expenses as coal is radioactive come decommissioning. They are not required to fund decommissioning.

The cost of nuclear is dramatically artificially inflated. Even with all this, it remains the cheapest form of electricity.

Well, nuclear waste are broad term. In reality there is loot of stuff which become radioactive and dangerous for environment not only 'fuel' and his by-products. So do more research. I personally know how much waste produce one research institute which actually don't have reactor in classic meaning of word. This are small research reactor, different from commercial or military. And because this institute are founded by government and all safety procedure are implemented, cost of securing and safe disposal of this stuff are astronomical. So no export of radioactive waste in third world countries or just throwing shit in ocean. In fact his work are limited because this costs.

Leftist propaganda.< Well this say everything about your mindset. There are people which use just facts as arguments, and other kind of people which use : "leftist / right wing propaganda", conspiracy theory™ and similar "arguments". Nope I use old research / discussion in my country, when government make some kind of public discussion about build Nuclear Plant. To really safe shutdown and seal nuclear plant you need loot of money. There was facts, black on white. Although there was two "fraction" one pro Nuclear energy and one against it. But no one accuse other side for lying or manipulate with numbers. Final nails in coffin are issue with nuclear waste. For safe deposit you need very geologically stable terrain without earthquakes, without underground water, without near population and or agricultural land, etc. And because export of nuclear waste was not option government abolish build Nuclear Plant. btw. we have great hydro potential and decent deposit of coal, which more or less cover state needs of energy. They even export energy to other countries.

TL;DR So I'm not totally against nuclear energy. At least I mention Thorium reactors. Do your own search and you will find why. You will also very easy be aware who and why stopped such research.
