Phones definitely increase efficiency. It helps me stay connected to out of state family, helps connect with homeschoolers easily and helps facilitate a lot of volunteer work that I do. There are apps that help you lay out your garden and keep great records of farm chores (animal worming schedules, etc). Yes, there are significant downsides but the technology can be super helpful.
