Because it humanizes the hero of Germany, and if you start to not view him as a pure monster the entire charade falls apart. It fell for me in less than a year.

The interesting part is how vilified the USSR was during the cold war, and Nazi Germany during WW2. Most of Germany's activities were to counter the USSR. Having both be "evil empires" requires a certain amount of cognitive dissidence
