My suggestion is if the escalator is out of order, don't use it. You have no idea what's wrong with it. They could have a step missing or the service hatch open and you could fall into it. Or the motor slips while you're on it and you go careening down what's essentially a run away metal conveyor belt. Escalators can be extremely dangerous and people treat them like amusement park rides. Sorry to be a buzz kill.
