>Africrypt, a South African cryptocurrency investment firm, has defrauded over $2.19 billion from its investors in an exit scam. The founders have reportedly disappeared with a staggering 63,000 BTC in what appears as the biggest exit scam in crypto history.
Africrypt was formed in 2016 under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer to offer global money transfers and investment opportunities.
The exit scam started looming in April 2021 after Africrypt reportedly claimed its’ network was under attack from hackers. The crypto firm wrote a letter to its clients alleging that clients’ accounts, wallets, and nodes had also been compromised and that a process to retrieve stolen funds had begun.
Nonetheless, some investors immediately became suspicious after the chief operating officer Ameer advised them not to report the issue to lawyers and authorities. According to the COO, involving authorities would slow down the recovery process of the missing funds.
