I propose to ban the use of "step parent" and replace it with "sloppy second spouse" or something derogatory. A step parent, traditionally, was rare. It was a guy like, "Oh? Your husband died in the war? My wife died in child birth. You're a widow and I'm a widower. Let's help each other out."
