Depends on the state. In most states if you're lawfully detained they can demand you identify yourself. They can arrest you if you fail to id.

In other states they can only demand id after arrest.

Do not trust the cops, they are not your friends. Sure, some of them may help you out occasionally, but they are outnumbered by the ones who want to arrest you, or potentially even kill you.

Never rely on a government employee to protect you or your family, that is not their job. That is your job.

I think the cops hear someone call them "sir" and they immediately think "lowlife scum trying to suck up." An absolutely neutral attitude is the best approach. Don't use titles at all, unless you know what their professional title is. If they're a State Trooper, you can call them "Trooper," a Sheriff's department officer is "Deputy," a plainclothesman is "Detective," and a city police officer is "Officer." Unless you get the rank wrong, like you were pulled over by a Sgt., or are being questioned by a Detective Sergeant. Federal officers are all "Agent."

But if you don't know what their title and rank is, just don't use honorifics at all. Because that would make you start to smell like a weasel to these guys.

Don’t answer with yes sir and yes mam that’s bullshit. I was a problem child and young adult. Ok Iv dealt with the cops more times than I can remember. Arrested more times than I can remember. You stay monotone, don’t make excuses, don’t apologize, don’t say sir or mam. Trust me. A lot of failing and life experience for me to learn this. Iv gotten out of the past idk 7 or 8 tickets with my method. If you say sir or mam they’re gonna know you’re trying to kiss their ass it won’t help your situation. One more note if they ask if they can search your car say NO goddamnit so many people are like yea sure. NO, SAY NO.
