Will they use green energy to make these cars?

[–] 3 pts

Doesn't matter. If they use the same energy they use to make gas cars you still have 150,000 miles (at least) of driving without burning gas. For the average gas-powered sedan that's about 99,000 lbs of CO2 emissions. Even from 100% coal power that's about 82,500 lbs of CO2 for the electric car. Add anything else to the power mix - nuclear, hydro, natural gas, solar, wind - and it just gets better.

But, even if electric cars had an increase in net pollution, they still have two huge things going for them:

  1. Centralized pollution. It is cheaper and more effective to outfit a single power plant with pollution controls than to control the emissions of the 1.6 million electric cars that could be powered by a single coal plant.
  2. Centralized pollution. Electric cars allow shifting pollution from urban centers to other areas where more favorable weather conditions can prevent smog buildup.

CO2 isn't pollution.

This is correct. Just so you know when you run into these people, 'greenhouse gases' are based on the idea of 'reemission', that is: they absorb in the same bands that they emit in, which, to small minds, could create a runaway effect (this runs afoul of physics).

Anyway, **any thermal spectrograph of the atmosphere is entirely driven by water; ** The area under the H2O graph is over an order of magnitude larger than that of the CO2.

So you don't believe the CO2 has any absorption bands in the 700-1000 nm range?

What do trees breathe?

What do trees breathe?

Depends on some things. During times when their stomata are closed because of high heat, drought stress, and at night they consume oxygen.

In all seriousness, wind turbines cost more energy to make then the ever put out in their lifetime and they kill tons of birds. You have to mine swaths of land for minerals. Solar panels aren't that great unless you have a majority sunny place to put them. Electric cars average 55k. It takes hours to charge the battery, and they can go about 200 -250 miles per charge. If you want to travel farther than one charge, a quick charge is an hour but you can't do that repeatedly cause it takes its toll on the life of the battery. How much to charging stations cost to put in? How many Solar panels does it take to charge a battery? I mean it doesn't make sense. It doesn't to me.

Electric cars average 55k

According to TrueCar:

  • Nissan Leaf S+ (250 miles range): $29,992 ($22,492 after federal tax credit).
  • Chevy Bolt (250 miles range): $27,259 ($19,759 after federal tax credit)

It takes hours to charge the battery, and they can go about 200 -250 miles per charge.

How often do you drive your car more than 250 miles every 8 hours?

How much to charging stations cost to put in?

If you don't already have a 220V outlet in the garage for an electric dryer, about $250 for another one.

I mean it doesn't make sense. It doesn't to me.

There's no way it doesn't make sense unless you regularly drive more than 250 miles a day (91,000 miles per year).

More importantly... why is it less manly to go electric?

https://electrek.co/2021/04/29/study-why-some-electric-car-owners-gas-reasons-surprising/

We show that discontinuance is related to dissatisfaction with the convenience of charging, having other vehicles in the household that are less efficient, not having level 2 (240-volt) charging at home, having fewer household vehicles and not being male.”

The most surprising factor that appears to influence going back to gas is that women EV owners go back at a higher rate than men.

Women like loud motors, that's all.
