I'm surprised the gas station attendant didn't shut off the pump, actually. I bet he lost nearly half of his gas on the road. He didn't even attempt to drive so as not lose gas due to inertia. Who am I kidding, he has no idea what that even is.

Maybe. The vapor pressure should have pushed it away from the tailpipe. And of course moving would keep it away from a combustion source too.
