Normally, they pay off their own kind with book deals and assume the public won't notice like the last several book deals we have seen.

--Sometimes I wonder if anything about this whole story is true at all. Bitcoin had been surging in popularity, so it's time to pump out the propaganda about how it's a "waste of energy" (Elon Musk announcement) and it is "used by criminals" (Ransomware causing pipeline outage). The exchange rate for Bitcoin has plunged, so now the rich and powerful can swoop in and buy a bunch more for themselves while the uninformed normie public obediently sells their Bitcoin off, at a loss.

I know. More elite peotry. BTC is too energy inefficient, attacks energy infrastructure for BTC.

It's pretty odd that the hackers wouldn't require payment in Monero or even ZCash rather than Bitcoin, since it's somewhat difficult to cash out BTC without it being obvious where it came from.

I worked for an oil and gas company for 13 years and can tell you that refineries use what we call PCN systems which stands for process control networks. These are the systems that open and close valves, etc. There is no data to hold for ransom on those systems!!
